Good Night Phone
Problem
As we become more and more connected to the virtual world through our devices, it has become increasingly difficult to put the devices down. It can be particularly tempting to use our cell phones in bed, but it is important to disconnect from our phones before bed to fall asleep faster and easier. The blue light and distraction phones provide detract from necessary, valuable sleeping time.
Research
Research was conducted to identify and understand current solutions for reducing screen time. After this research, it was determined that there was an opportunity to design a physical solution that encourages phone-free time before going to bed for better sleep. After brainstorming and sketching, Onshape and Illustrator were used to design a cell phone box prototype to discourage phone use while in bed.
Solution
The prototype was laser cut from medium-density fiberboard. To discourage screen time in bed, the box has a cover, which can be removed by putting your finger or fingers through the hole in the top to pull it off. There is a small hole on the side of the box for a cord to fit through, which allows the device to charge while in it. In the back are cutouts that serve as air vents in case of any overheating from charging. The box is also large enough to fit multiple devices and cords. The design elements on the front, top, and back are in the theme of nighttime and daytime to symbolize going to sleep and waking up, with “night night…” on the front; a moon, stars, and a sun on the top; and star cutouts as air vents on the back.
