Anti-Bias Application

Problem

BIPOC members of universities may not feel like they have a "seat at the table" and do not have a way to comfortably express their feelings when they experience instances of bias. Issues of racism, bias, and discrimination are complex and can be difficult to address, and unfortunately, may be overlooked or ignored.

Research

Initial interviews were conducted to understand pain points people may experience in the context of racism. Further interviews were conducted with students, staff, and faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Madison to develop empathy and an understanding of problems members of this university may face when dealing with bias. Using Design Thinking methods and tools, such as Miro for brainstorming and ideation, multiple concepts and prototypes were developed to gain initial feedback. From this feedback, a prototype of an application that serves as a communication tool and means to provide teaching and learning moments to address bias was developed.

Solution

This application reduces bias for those who want to grow awareness in an age of increased interest in diversity and inclusion. Through partnerships with anti-racist educators and DEI programs, this application builds empathy, creates a sense of belonging, improves interpersonal communication, and fosters a growth mindset. This solution is currently in the process of further iteration to address needs that were uncovered in later interviews and deeper research into the viability and feasibility of the use of such an application in a university setting.
